Worktops

The kitchen surface that ends the conversation about durability.

A Bellistri worktop is one continuous slab of enamelled basalt — no laminate edge, no resin, no reseal schedule. Set a hot pan on it, cut straight onto it, forget it's there.

Real Kitchens

One material, endless kitchens

From a quiet Scandinavian kitchen to a glass tower over Manhattan, the same fired slab reads differently in every room. Fifty-eight glazes and seven finishes mean the material adapts to the house — never the other way round.

Smaltata vs Levigata

Glass-glossy, or quietly matte

Every worktop begins as the same basalt slab; the finish decides how it meets the light. The two ends of the range, side by side.

Smaltata — Glazed Enamel

Fired to a mirror shine

A vitreous glaze fired at 1000°C throws back every pendant light in the room. The natural choice for a bar front, an island built to be looked at, or a colour that wants real depth.

Levigata — Honed Matte

Ground to a soft matte

No gloss layer, no glare — just the flat, tactile face of ground basalt. Our most requested finish for kitchens that work hard every day and still need to look effortless.

Every claim, tested at the hob

Heat

Withstands direct contact with cookware up to 300°C without scorching or discolouring.

Scratch

The fired enamel sits harder than steel; knives and pans do not mark the surface.

Stain

Zero porosity means red wine, turmeric and oil never penetrate the surface.

Hygiene

A closed, glass-like face with nowhere for bacteria to lodge — wipe clean with water.

How It's Made

From Etna basalt to a finished worktop

Bellistri has worked lava stone for 27 years, from a workshop in Catania, Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna. Every worktop starts as a raw block of basalt quarried from historic Etna lava flows — not a composite, not a veneer, but a single volcanic stone that has already survived one encounter with extreme heat. What happens next is the same five-step process we have refined since 1999.

01 — Quarrying

Basalt blocks are cut from selected Etna lava flows, chosen for density and an even grain.

02 — Slabbing

Blocks are gang-sawn into 20mm or 30mm slabs and cured before any surface work begins.

03 — Finishing

Each slab is hand-glazed and fired at 1000°C for Smaltata, or ground and honed for Levigata and the other five finishes.

04 — Templating

Your kitchen is templated to the millimetre before cutting, so sink, hob and drainer cut-outs fit first time.

The result is a worktop that behaves like the rock it came from. Where a quartz worktop is a resin-bound composite that can scorch or discolour near a hob, and a laminate worktop has a seam the moment water gets under the edge, a Bellistri slab is fired stone the whole way through — the surface you cook on in year one is the surface still there in year twenty.

Care & Maintenance

Built to be used, not babied

Because the surface is a zero-porosity vitreous enamel (Smaltata) or dense ground basalt (our other six finishes), a Bellistri worktop needs none of the upkeep a natural stone worktop does — no annual sealing, no stone-specific soap, no anxiety about a glass of red wine left overnight.

Daily cleaning

Warm water and a normal washing-up liquid is all that's needed. No sealing is ever required — the fired surface is already closed to liquids and bacteria.

Avoid

Metal scouring pads used aggressively over many years can dull a glazed (Smaltata) sheen. A soft cloth or a plastic scourer keeps the gloss intact indefinitely.

Impact, not heat, is the risk

The surface resists scratches and heat to 300°C, but like any hard stone it can chip if a heavy object is dropped squarely on an edge or corner. We profile every edge to reduce this risk.

Frequently asked

How does the price compare to quartz or granite?

A Bellistri worktop sits in the premium natural-stone bracket, comparable to high-end granite or engineered quartz, but with no resealing costs over the worktop's lifetime. Send your kitchen dimensions for an exact quote.

Can lava stone crack or chip?

It resists scratching and heat better than quartz or granite, but a hard, direct blow to an unsupported edge — the same weak point any stone worktop has — can chip it. Correct cabinet support and profiled edges (see our edge profiles) minimise this.

Is my cabinetry strong enough to carry it?

At 20–30mm thick, a lava stone worktop weighs roughly the same per square metre as granite. Standard kitchen cabinetry carries it without reinforcement; we confirm load points during templating.

Can a damaged worktop be repaired?

Minor chips on a Levigata (honed) finish can often be ground and re-honed on site. Glazed (Smaltata) repairs typically require a replacement section, colour-matched from the same 58-glaze palette.

How long does an order take?

6–8 weeks from confirmed template to installation, since each slab is finished and fired to order rather than held as pre-made stock.

Do you install outside Denmark?

Yes. We ship and coordinate installation across Europe; see Contact for a project-specific delivery quote.
